What to check before you buy
Look for the metal's hallmark and fineness (750 for 18-karat gold, 950 for platinum), the total carat weight of any stones, and for diamonds the grading report from an independent laboratory. The seller's page should state all of these; if it does not, ask before buying.
Where the price comes from
Fine jewellery is priced on metal weight, stone quality and the house's design premium. Two pieces that look alike can differ several times in price on stone grade alone, so compare the specification, not the photograph.
Authenticity
